Generosity or Selfishness What Do You See in Genesis 13?

When reading Genesis 13 have you ever thought about the acts of generosity and selfishness? How would you characterize Abram and Lot? What I have seen in the story leading up to this point is that Abram wanted to obey God, but he did not want to leave all his family behind. Abram and Lot must have had a wonderful relationship. Abram asked Lot to leave the rest of their family to go to a country neither of them knew. But, I have a feeling it was more one-sided than one may think at first.

Generosity

a plaque that says Prayer of Generosity Dear Lord teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve. To give and not to count the cost. To fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for any reward. Save that of knowing I am doing your will. St. Ignatius Loyola

What I see in chapter 13 is Abram understanding that the land they were in was not able to support both Lot’s family and his. With his love for Lot and wanting only good for him Abram made a very hard decision. I suggested to Lot that they separate. This had to have been a very hard decision for Abram, this would mean letting go of the last of his extended family. He would need to trust God to provide a family for him. I see this as a first sign of Abram’s generosity towards Lot.

Selfishness

Abram even went a step further in letting Lot chose the best land for himself. What appeared to be left to Abram would be a dry wasteland. Lot showed himself to be a bit selfish in wanting the best for him and his family. Whereas most people would think that Lot’s choice would be logical. All he is thinking of is the care of his family and possession. But, what about the care of his Uncle, the only extended family he had in the area? Lot just wanted the easy life of the area that appeared to be similar to what he left behind.

Generosity

What about the decisions we make today? Do we take into account the preservation of all involved? Are we more like Abram or Lot? I know for me I often think like Lot. How to help my kids and I survive, prosper even. God blessed Abram for the decisions and the generosity of Abram’s heart. How much more should we do likewise? Are we to think of more than just who is immediately around us.
