Pray without ceasing
God loves you!
One of our best weapons in this world but often the least utilized is prayer. Why is that? Why do people think that we can do life’s battles in our own power? I think these questions have many answers, probably as many people as there are on earth. Let’s see if we can explore some of the issues of people not wanting to pray.
First one I can think of is just the fact not believing that God is real. For myself I have a hard time with this statement, “God is not real.” I do not have the scientific knowledge to debate with someone who needs proof like that. I do think that there is an ever growing evidence in the science world that there is a God, but I do not have by any means the ability to present it. But, if one does not believe in God then prayer is useless to them.
Next thing I can think of is trust. Prayer means that we trust that God is listening.
Thing is we live in a broken world and our trust is hard to do for many of us We have been hurt so much we guard our hearts and minds to a point of closing out even God. The experiences we have here on earth makes it hard for us to believe that something we cannot see and physically touch can help us. Then there are the times that God does not seem to answer the way we think He should. The pain that comes with our expectations, or what we view as our needs going unmet by what everyone says is a loving Father who provides for all our needs. When we experience this what do we do with the fact that He asks us to pray without ceasing? What is the use if nothing ever changes?
I wish I had the answers to some of these questions that come up for people. The only thing I can come up with is start small. My good friend Ruthi who died of cancer awhile back was a wonderful example of praying even if you do not see the answer to your prayer. She always advocated for praying, above all else pray. Pray for those who hurt you terribly, the ones who abused you, your rapist, the ones who sad bad things about you etc. In your life time you may not see the other person change, but through prayer God can work on healing your heart.
Ruthi fought cancer in her stomach for about 2 years before she died. All the way through she prayed, for her friends, for people she met around the world online, for those who severely hurt her, she would even stop what she was doing and pray if the circumstance called for it. She is my example of it means to pray without ceasing. Every chance she got she would be listening to the Bible being read on YouVersion Bible app with her phone in her pocket so she was having a never ending conversation with God.
Today I am thankful for my ability to pray and to know God is hearing me. It has taken about 12 years to see the way God is answering my prayers but I know all along He has been working. Trust for me is hard to come by but God is changing me from the inside out. Now I find my mind wandering to talking to God when I am not talking to others around me. I fear my daughter will not find an apartment by the time I move into the house God gave my husband and I. But, I see the miracle of what God has done in my marriage and I talk to God about my daughter all day, only in Him can I show the strength and peace to my daughter. I know God has a plan and He will provide in the right time. I see all the issues and they could overwhelm me, but I am not letting them with God there is an answer. Today I am thankful the the ability to pray without ceasing.
