Ice cream

Ice cream verses Meat and Christians

Ice cream

Ice cream verses meat.

Hebrews 5:12-14

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!

13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil”

Today as we were consulting with someone the topic of the study came up. In particular, the study of God’s word and the topic of using devotionals as bible study material.

Now to be clear, I am not against a devotional, they can be very helpful, and enlightening if used in the right way. In fact, God has many times spoken to me using these methods.

However, I want to examine something in the set of verses I listed. The Bible explains that the word can be compared to two things, milk-ice cream and solid food, or meat. In this passage, the Bible says that baby Christians constantly need milk, or to be taught the basics of the faith. They are not cutting their teeth on the meat of God’s word.

I bring this up because I believe that one of the best ways to grow, is to dive into God’s word and let his word speak for itself. The Bible says that his word is sharper than a two-edged sword. Able to separate between the bone and marrow able to judge even the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

His word is a lamp for our feet, a light for our path.

So, in saying all of this, am I against using devotions?  Not at all, I think they are kind of like ice cream, enjoyable and feels good. They can be sweet, tasty and give you enough of a taste to want more.

However, if you spend time, true quality time in God’s word daily. You will not get just a taste, not just a small bit of ice cream, that will not fill you completely. But you will get a prime rib steak that is found in the love letter, that our God wrote for us. He had to use 66 books to do it, and it took him a few hundred years to get it done. He has now offered it to you, and me, and he says come, read what I’ve written you.
