Integrity and Promise What Do They Have To Do With Each other

Integrity and Promise

Integrity in·teg·ri·ty[inˈteɡrədē] NOUN the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.”he is known to be a man of integrity”

Promise prom·ise[ˈpräməs]NOUNa declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen.”what happened to all those firm promises of support?”

In this chapter God interrupts Joseph’s story with Judah’s family history. What stands out to me is the promise Judah made to Tamar. He promised she could marry his youngest but that did not happen. So Tamar took things into her own hands so she could have a child. Judah was not a man of integrity and promise in this story.

While I find this story rather hard to understand. How immoral it all seems with her marrying several brothers. But I guess that is the way of the Levite laws. Then posing as a prostitute? Our culture is so much more different than back then. In the end Judah admits Tamar was more righteous than he in this matter.

If Tamar posed as a prostitute and Judah considered her more righteous then what did Judah do that was so wrong? What I see is that Judah did not carry through with his promise. According to their laws back then it was his job to give his youngest to her. But Judah let his fear of losing another son stop him. He did not carry through with his promise.

I tend to think when a person does not carry through with their promises it is a form of lying. This in effect shows how trustworthy they are. This happens enough times no one will believe anything a person says. God calls us to be people of integrity. To be honest and honorable because we are His representatives to others.

integrity and promise
No matter how educated, talented, rich or cool you believe you are. How you treat people ultimately tells all. Integrity is everything.

It happens sometimes though that things get in the way of us keeping our promises we make. No one is perfect. To be people of integrity though we need to admit and explain why we could not keep our promise. Always remembering to be careful when we do make a promise because if we cannot carry through it affects our image, but most of all how people see Christians or even God!

If you have been hurt by someone breaking their promises. Or if you feel God tugging on your heart because you broke your promise to someone. Please know I am always here to listen and pray with you.
