Silent Night of Worship by Franz Gruber

Silent Night

Imagine the worship when Jesus was born! The angels rejoiced. People sang. They bowed. They recognized that this baby was sent by God, that He was God in the flesh, a holy King.

One of the best known songs of worship at Christmas time today is “Silent Night”. (I have recently learned that this song has been translated into about 140 languages.. Obviously the song is very popular.  At the end of this post, we will talk about the history behind the song, and how it was instigated by a flood! But more than the history, I want us to look at the words.

Silent night. Holy night. All is calm. All is bright. Round yon virgin, mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild. Sleep in Heavenly  peace. Sleep in Heavenly peace.”

Silent night. Holy night. Shepherds quake at the site. Glories stream from Heaven afar. Heavenly hosts sing ‘alleluia’. Christ the Savior is born. Christ the Savior is born

Silent night. Holy night. Son of God, loves pure light. Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace. Jesus, Lord at thy birth. Jesus, Lord at thy birth.”

According to Wikipedia, the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night” was composed in 1818. I just realized that was 200 years ago! The music was by Joseph Mohr, a priest in Oberndorf, a village in the Austrian empire. It seems that a flood had damaged the organ in his church. Here it was Christmas Eve, and the music he had for organ was simply not going to work, not with a broken organ! Two years earlier, he had written the words to Silent Night, (originally called “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht”). Mohr asked fellow musician Franz Gruber to write a melody and guitar accompaniment for the Christmas Eve mass.

Whether we use guitar, organ, drums, keyboard, or no instruments at all, let our worship be of this same Jesus, who was born, died, and rose again, and is one day coming back again. Even so, come Lord Jesus. Even so, come. You are the one we worship and praise.
