Thankful for My Friends
and what they have taught me
I did not get to where I am without people in my life. Some of them affected me negatively, and some positively. So many times we concentrate on being thankful for the ones who had a positive impact. But, what about the ones that appeared to have a damaging affect on us? Is there a way to be grateful for them too? Is there a reason that God allowed those people in our lives?
7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.1 Peter 1:7 New Living Translation (NLT)
Think about the person who hurt you the worst? The most painful experience you have been through with a person, or because of a person? What did you learn from it? Could the above verse ring true to the experience?
This is why I am thankful for my friends, even the ones who have hurt me in the past. Every single one of them helped develop me to who I am today. We learn to communicate better, and our personal boundaries on how we interact with others. Many times we grow more from the people who hurt us because it all forces us to evaluate ourselves. If we have the wherewithal in us we learn to lean on Jesus which will build our faith. He teaches us that only through Him can we learn from the hurtful experiences. He will then bless us as we allow God to turn those hurtful times into our ability to help others.
thankful for my friends
So, next time you think it is impossible to forgive someone look back on the lessons the experience taught you. Think about how God helped you and how He could use that to help others. Maybe, just maybe we could get to a point of actually praying blessings for those who hurt us? Asking God to heap abundant generosity on our worst enemies. Because without them we would not be who God needs us to be. Do not just thank the Lord for the friends you think fondly off, but praise the Lord for those who helped you learn some tough lessons in life.
