The True Meaning of Repentance

The True Meaning of Repentance

When the Gospel message is given, and we talk to people about accepting Christ as their Lord and saviour. Its something like, hey, if you want to come to know Jesus, and receive his forgiveness, all you have to do is say this prayer. Say it from your heart, and you are in. If repentance is ever spoken of, it is portrayed in such a way that if I sin, all I have to do is ask God for forgiveness, and move on. Now, while that statement is true, I believe that many people have forgotten the real meaning of repentance. The very act of repentance is to stop whatever it is that you are doing, turn away from it, and never do it again.

It is true that if you ask God for his forgiveness, he will extend to you his grace. However, this in itself does not give a genuine follower of Christ a license to sin. Repentance does not mean that we have sort of a cover my butt deal until the next time we mess up. While it is true that we will mess-up up, the Bible says that we should come quickly to repentance.

In fact, the first thing that Jesus said when he began his ministry was “Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” He did not say that if you just say you’re sorry and promise to never do it again, then your good, no! He said to repent. If you know that you are doing something that you know is sinful, then you are to call it what it is, turn your back on it and never do it again.

No one is perfect, and God understands that. Our imperfection is the very reason for Jesus’s death on the cross. However, Jesus says that we are to be perfect as the Heavenly Father is perfect. In other words, we are to strive to be just like Jesus. He was a lamb without spot or blemish, and He fulfilled all that the law required. Am I saying that we are still under the law, No! When Christ died, it was the sign of the new covenant that the father made with His people in His blood.
