Why is fasting so important
About a few weeks ago I finished up a class on fasting, and why is fasting so important. Here are a few key factors that I’ve learned.
- Fasting brings you closer to God’s heart.
- When you , it doesn’t have to be food, just something you love doing, and replace it with reading and praying to God.
- It’s not a feeling, but act of obedient when you do. (More on that story down below)
- You should expect God to move in your life by fasting, because you’re totally depending upon Him.
- It’s important to get away into that quite area space with you and God, so you can feel refreshed when you go back out into the world again.
Why is fasting so important
Yesterday I took some time out for just me and God. I read His Word, and prayed a lot. I could only do so much because my focus could last for so long, but you know what? God saw my heart, and it was something He was working within me to do, I just had to stop making excuses of why I couldn’t spend at least half the day with Him. Usually when people set side time to fast, they know what they’re believing for. Well for me, it was an act of obedience, and it was just for blessings and favor in my life. God knows those needs. While I was reading and praying, I didn’t feel anything, but you know what? By the end of my time with my Heavenly Father I felt more peaceful, and more at ease about things going on in my life. It’s amazing when we disconnect with the world, and with God what it will do for you. For the last few days my mind has been going everywhere, so that special time with my Father was so needed.
You might be thinking, “I can’t block out half the day just to be with God.” He knows that, but let me ask you, can you block out your TV or phone time to spend time with Him every so often? Or what about waking up earlier or going to bed later, just to talk with your Heavenly Father? Don’t you want and need that peace that can only come by Him?
I remember when I was in high school I’d usually wake up around 4:00 AM to pray, watch a Christian TV program, and read the Word. Sure there were days I missed a few days, but that time with God was so special to me. In the beginning I didn’t want to, but over time I looked forward to that special time.
You might be thinking what the difference is between fasting and spending time with Him. Well fasting means your relying on your Heavenly Father, and it proves to yourself and Him that He comes first, and you can and that nothing is an idol in your life. As well as you can expect favor to follow you as you do fast. Like me, you may not feel anything, but you do it out of obedience.
Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’
This was one of the verses I read yesterday that really spoke to me. Jesus was hungry in the wildness, and Satan was tempting Him, and this is what Jesus replied. As long as you have the Word of God in your heart and reading it, you truly have all that you need.
This coming week, how can you make more room for God in your life?
May the Lord bless and keep you,
